I've read this before - in paperback and it's exceptional. Unfortunately, the Kindle version was completely messed up. I can't tell how much is missing from each section but it's evident that whole chunks have been omitted or deleted within the transfer to electronic. The text style alternates which is disconcerting in and of itself but to have to "make up" what happened from one page to the next is more than annoying. Having read it before, I could kind of piece it together - but that seems some how wrong - so I returned it for a refund. I'm only writing this to forewarn others who might be inclined to purchase the Kindle version.

Jovah Angel Samaria Book 2 Sharon Shinn 9780441005192 Books Reviews

I enjoyed Archangel, but could not ignore several weaknesses in the plot. I found this tale far more convincing, and all its pieces fit well together. Additionally, I found the protagonist, Allelujah, a far more sympathetic character than any others so far. She is quiet and scholarly, thrust into the limelight against her will, and doing her very best to do what needs to be done. She is an admirable character.

I am enjoying the Samaria series, though nearly against my will. The "science fiction" lacks science, and I usually don't read romance... However, wings make some difference, and Shinn is truly a very good writer.
I've read all 5 books in the Samaria series,(more than once), beginning with Archangel, and have enjoyed every one. The development of the society is very detailed, and the characters are people you want to know more about. This book brings the beginnings of major advancements in technology, and points to big problems with various groups who disagree on how the future should look.
I read this book for the first time about 20 years ago. I still love it. Definitely has a different feel than the first book in the series, Archangel . Therewas more science this time, but that's OK. Sharon Sharon has an amazing gift for creating wonderful characters that you just love and sympathize with. Can't wait to read the alleluia files next.
I liked this book. I did not love it. The story was a little slow in pace. The characters not as interesting. If the first book was a vivid blue, this story is a pale and lighter version. A well written and thought provoking tale that lacked the ability to completely hold my attention.
Originally this was a trilogy, then two additional books were published. I had suspected enough plot threads were dropped as material for a sixth book, but only five total have been published to date.

That is the main reason I am giving this book four in lieu of five stars. The style of going back for flashbacks got a little tiresome. One chapter moves the story forward, the next takes us back a week in the life of another character. Once or twice was ok, it was too much in this book. Also the conceit that they don't know who the son of Jeremiah is, is pretty thin.

I like the idea of the Samaria world. I regret that the author teases us with information that is not re-visited. We suspect there is a back story, due to certain clues, history that characters speak of - and then get disappointed when nothing comes of it.

The story itself though, is quite good - a complete spin on religion. Their religion is both more real than ours and more fake. I loved the implications.
The second Samaria book, "Jovah's Angel" surprised me from the beginning. I had expected a continuation of the lives of Rachel and Gabriel, instead Shinn has created a novel of the same world that could actually stand alone. She does make references to the characters from the first book, but this story is set many years past the archangel Gabriel and his Edori bride.

It wasn't just the change in time that was intriguing though. This book also diverted from the religious based first book to introduce science into the mix. The archangel in this book lives in a world where factories have emerged and Jovah no longer seems to be able to hear any of the angels, except her. The weather is getting out of control and flooding harms the land all around. It seems that this time science instead of faith may be the answer to the world's problems.

I found the book to be enjoyable and interesting. I was surprised and intrigued by the twists that came about toward the end, and it left me wanting to read the third book in the series!
I really love the world building in this series, I find it completely fascinating. This follows on from Archangel, but it's over a hundred years later. The events of Archangel are referred to and I think reading it in order would deepen the readers' appreciation, but it's not essential. I liked the romance better than Archangel, and I liked how people were beginning to question their religious dogma. The Endori are a little too perfect, but other than that this is a welcome visit to the world of Samaria and I would highly recommend this book.
