I love the classics so this book was perfect on my nightstand. I chose what stories suited me for the moment and, as with anthologies, that's one of the beauties of reading a different story, a different author every week. I especially liked Hauff's Severed Hand and Balzac's Mysterious Mansion. This book is an adventure back in time with the greatest of writers.

Andrew Barger is rapidly becoming recognized as an authority on scary things. Andrew Barger is well-known for his horror anthologies and this is one of the best. He has compiled twelve of the best short stories from the early modern Gothic period. He also includes a wonderful list of the over 300 tales he read for this collection, giving the reader an excellent reference source to continue.

Really good stories written by the best masters of horror. I already have some of these in other books but there is always one or two that I am missing.
